Who we are

Established in 1969, the Women's National Commission is the official and independent advisory body giving the views of women to the government of the United Kingdom. It is an umbrella organisation representing women and women's organisations in England, Northern Ireland, Scotland and Wales to ensure women's views are taken into account by the government and are heard in public debate.

The WNC is based alongside the Government Equalities Office, which was formed from the Women and Equality unit established in 1997 as the Women's Unit, to support the Ministers for Women.

The WNC is an advisory Non Departmental Public Body (NDPB), meaning it is fully funded by government but able to comment freely on government policy. In its unique role, the WNC liaises with, and is consulted by, the Government Equalities Office, as well as other government departments.

Baroness Anita Gale, speaking at an event in Cardiff, outlined the role and structure of the WNC. A copy of the transcript can be downloaded from the WNC Publications area.

The WNC Board agrees an annual business plan with the Ministers for Women to plan the work it will carry out during the year.

These are grouped into a number of workstreams and prioritised by the Board, based on the views of our Partner organisations and Ministers.

The current workstreams are listed in the menu above, and include work on;

  • Combating Violence against Women
  • Reporting to the United Nations on the progress of the UK in meeting it's International obligations
  • Expanding the network of Partners, canvassing their views and acting as a bridge between them and government
  • Working with others to increase the number of women taking a role in public life, by becoming a school governor, a councillor, a board member of an organisation, etc.

Our progress is reported to Partners in our newsletters, on this website and in our annual report. Partners also meet with us and discuss our work in working groups and at events held across the UK.
